10 most adventurous things to do when visiting South Africa

South Africa not only has breath taking scenery but is a platform for many activities that will literally take your breathe away.

Bloukrans Bridge Bungee Jumping

For some, the most breath taking would be bungee jumping 216 metres off Bloukrans Bridge in the Tsitsikamma area of the Garden Route. This is famous for being one of the worlds highest commercial bungee jumps. You haven’t really bungee jumped unless you’ve Bloukrans Bridge jumped! Nothing gives one a sense of sheer adrenalin more than diving off a platform with a cord tied to oneself and seeing the ground in the distant future. The Bloukrans Bridge is world-famous in the bungee-jumping community, so get those “big boy” or “big girl” pants on, and give it a go. Getting to the bridge is extremely easy as it is located on the main highway on the Garden Route, so you have no excuses for not finding it! Also, because it is not far from the Bloukrans Bridge, we recommend stopping and visiting Plettenberg Bay, it is a truly beautiful coastal town.

Tandem Skydive at Mossel Bay

Being airborne and on cloud 9 doesn’t end at bungee and swing jumping. Tandem sky dive from 10 000 feet in the beautiful Mossel Bay. Mossel Bay isn’t the only place to sky dive in South Africa, there’s also opportunities in Bloemfontein, Cape Town and Langebaan. The thrill of being in the air plus the exquisite views is a ticket to heaven. To get started, simply sign-up with any of South Africa’s many Skydiving clubs – they will provide you with all the information that you need to get started. You will need to do some training prior to your jump, so if you’re strapped for time, make sure you check out how long before your jump you need to be there. With South Africa’s majestic scenery, taking a jump will surely provide you with absolutely magnificent views, as well as providing you with an experience that you will absolutely never forget. Dont forget to purchase a video of your dive – most Skydiving Clubs provide this as an added extra.

River Rafting on the Orange River

If these air activities don’t quite float your boat, try white river rafting down one of South Africa’s most well- known rivers, the Orange River which runs through Richtersveld. These exhilarating waters promise rapids for all levels and fun all round. Along with the rapids there’s also beautiful scenery, an enriching history and the chance to get away from the hub and bub of city life to simply experience the remoteness of nature. There are a fair few companies that offer a variety of awesome adventures on the Orange River, so make sure you check out a few of them before deciding on which one you wish to do. They vary in the lengths of time on the river, they types of canoes etc, so do your research first. Make sure you pack your sun-cream, as it can be scorchingly hot on the river.

Kayaking in St Lucia

If rapids aren’t exciting enough on their own, St Lucia in Kwa- Zulu Natal offers a kayaking experience like no other- kayak with the worlds most notoriously dangerous animals- hippos and crocodiles! A kayak, nature and some exciting creatures, what more could you ask for? Whilst kayaking in St Lucia looks incredibly serene and picturesque (and it is!), the presence of these incredible animals makes sure that you have enough in the back of your mind to stay alert at all times. The surrounding landscape is rich in a variety of indigenous vegetation, and it is green all year round. Again, there are a number of companies that offer this, so do your research first.

Shark Cage Diving in Gansbaai

While we’re still water bound, it would be remiss to come to South Africa and not pay a visit to our sharp toothed friends. Gansbaai near Cape Town is the spot for this (although there are other cage dive options around Cape Town, Gansbaai is the best one to opt for as the sharks have been known to hang around here all year round). Shark cage diving offers the unique opportunity of going into the territory of Great White Sharks, while remaining securely in your cage. The cages are incredibly safe, so you don’t need to fear any mishaps. Become acquainted with their cold intensity while they circle you as you submerge in the salty water. Shark Cage diving is the perfect opportunity to face your fears in the deep dark ocean. Send our love to Jaws…

Hike the Otter Trail

After some air and water adventures, maybe its time to keep our feet firmly on the ground. There’s no better way to do this than by hiking the surreal Otter trail from Storm’s River Mouth to Natures Valley in the Tsitsikamma National Park. The trail is 42.5km and can take up to 5 days! The hike is not for the feint hearted as it is a strenuous climb over great distances. Some of the terrain can be arduous to climb, so if you are not pretty fit, give this a miss. But if you can do this, you can do anything. Book for this now to prove if you really are a cut above the rest.

Paraglide off Table Mountain

Table Mountain is one of South Africa’s most prized possessions, making it onto the list of 7 world wonders. Climbing or using the cable car can seem too conventional to do this attraction any justice, so why not abseil down! The abseil starts 1000 feet above sea level and is 112metre descent making it the world’s highest commercial abseiling point. Not only is it high, but the views will make it the most worthwhile. If you really want to engage in a typical tourist attraction but in the most unique way, then this is for you. You also have the option of paragliding down the mountain, you need to arrange this first with one of the companies that offer this.

Rock and Roll around the Cederberg Mountains

A cloud of dust puffs up mid-air behind your wheels as you meander along the dirt road, above a lone jackal buzzard’s glides into the distance and to your sides rock formations – stacked by Mother Nature herself – grab your attention with an “oh, look here” and an “oh, look there”. This is the […]

#BringYourBottle To The Serengeti

The recent decision by the Tanzanian government (and Kenya’s in 2017) to ban plastic bags and reduce the use of plastic is great news.  Keen to join the cause, our team has signed up to help our local suppliers in a bid to reduce the number of single-use plastic bottles.

The Serengeti & Ngorongoro safari vehicles we use are being fitted with new 20-litre water dispensers, each one filled with safe potable drinking water from Arusha.

Now, we’re asking clients to come on board, by bringing along their own refillable water bottle instead of buying plastic bottles locally. If we have 100% of clients refilling it will significantly reduce the use of waste – our combined efforts putting an end to plastic pollution.

If you’re keen on keeping Africa green, why not share a bott-flie from your tour with the hashtag #Bringyourbottle to encourage other safari-goers to do the same.

Visit the Serengeti, this national park is one of the world’s best locations for wildlife viewing.

Tanzania Bans ALL Plastic Bags

From 01 June, the Government of Tanzania implemented a ban on all plastic carrier bags, regardless of thickness. They are now prohibited from being imported, exported, manufactured, sold, stored, supplied and used in mainland Tanzania.

Plastic packaging for medical services, industrial products, construction industry, agricultural sector, foodstuffs, sanitary and waste management is excluded from the ban.

You are advised to avoid carrying plastic carrier bags or packing plastic bags or items in plastic carrier bags in suitcases or hand luggage. Special desks will be present at all entry points for the surrender of plastic carrier bags that you bring into Tanzania.

‘Ziploc bags’ (specifically used to carry toiletries) will, however, be permitted as they are expected to remain in the permanent possession of visitors, and are not expected to be disposed in the country.
